Out on the pontoon tonight, and saw a bird flying in the top of the pines. It turned out to be an osprey, definitely ID'ed by its call. We see a lot of them in Florida in the winter, but this is the first one I have seen on Long Lake.

Happened to look out the kitchen window and saw one loon laying on our shore and the other swimming close to shore. Then, that one joined the other on land, but by the time we started taking pictures, one went back into the water with the other following soon thereafter. We are thankful for the pictures we did capture; a very exciting moment for us.

The loons are back on our shore! Get a Room!!! Just wonder if they have a nest. Earlier this a.m. one of them was on shore moving leaves, etc. around her but stopped. Not a good place for a nest. Think they are confused because of the high water. We have seen them return to our shore twice since this picture. Each time they mated. How fortunate we are!!! Last year they didn't have babies. We think the high water had something to do with that. Hope they're successful this year.

These pictures were taken from our sunroom window. We're sure they are sitting on eggs (I'm assuming 2) now, because we only see one loon at a time. Hope the eggs survive, and we have little ones soon. Incubation normally takes 29 days, starting with laying of lst egg. Guess I'll have to send out birth announcements when the big day comes (ha ha).

The brown bird at the feeder had been a mystery to me for several weeks. It looked a little like some sparrows, but too large. I also noticed that I frequently saw it with the rose-breasted grosbeak. Flipping through my bird book one day, I was surprised to realize that it is the female rose-breasted grosbeak. My book also indicated that young males do not develop full adult plumage in their first year so that may account for the male looking a bit scraggly.
